About ME Free For All.org
ME Free For All.org is an organisation for all those with an interest in M.E. - sufferers, their carers, doctors and researchers - to come together.
We have no funding whatsoever. We rely on the generosity of sponsors for all our equipment and on volunteers for labour. Special thanks go to our principal sponsors 1Link4IT and our team.
All may have access to the same information in the same place. The M.E. Community has suffered from incomplete and misinformation because of a combination of selective publication, censorship, exclusion of some readers, ignorance, mischief and even malevolence.
ME Free For All.org has the most liberal editorial policy excluding only that which is factually incorrect, defamatory or in any way illegal, or gratuitously offensive.
Otherwise, contributions of all shades of opinion are welcome and encouraged.
It is a democratic system which often brings together some strange bedfellows. It is an independent, apolitical, forum where contributors should expect assertiveness, not uncontrolled aggression. The mood is tolerant, good humoured, never ill tempered.
Anyone may join ME Free For All.org. All members have equal status here regardless of their academic standing, social status or authority elsewhere.
Despite one interpretation of its name, ME Free For All.org is disciplined and business-like. Yet it is not a business in the commercial sense of being opposed to others in the same field, seeking to take them over or put them out of business; rather, it is complementary.
Where something is already in existence that cannot be improved upon, ME Free For All.org provides links to it and credit for its invention where it rightly belongs.
Where something is poor or nonexistent, ME Free For All.org improves or introduces it.
Rather than the traditional kind of organisation, which communicates with its members, on paper, through journals, magazines and newsletters, ME Free For All.org is dominantly Internet based.
Those who do not yet have access to the Internet will do so shortly. Acquisition rate is exponential. Take up is probably faster than any other technology. How many people do you know who do not have a television, telephone, mobile etc.? Some, perhaps but not many.
However, there are people without Internet connection now, some may choose to stay offline and some may have no option if they cannot afford it or are not well enough to access it. These "Offliners" will be equally welcome to join ME Free For All.org but they will need "Onliners" to download and get information to them.
There is more than merely information passing here. It is a great opportunity for social contact with fellow M.E. sufferers. A large proportion of "Offliners", without Internet connection, are also more likely to be amongst the more severely affected, including housebound & bedridden. It will take some understanding of how much/little each "Offliner" is capable of, whether details should be mailed, or delivered, whether they should be phoned etc. Joining ME Free For All.orgAnyone may visit ME Free For All.org, freely and read such content as the front page, latest news, forthcoming events and some of the social & leisure pages, without needing to register.
But for full access to all areas of the website and to use the forum, it is necessary to enrol and log in.
Membership is free and we encourage everyone to join for a number of reasons:
Firstly, it formalises the system, allows us to monitor the ways in which members use the site and analyse the statistics, to improve our service for all.
Secondly, it enables us to clearly identify visitors, for better security and safety, which always makes people more comfortable.
Thirdly, and most importantly, it gives us the opportunity to gather data by questionnaire, or experimental research - if people are willing or well enough to allow us - to improve our understanding of M.E. and help towards a cure.
We suggest that, if you have no objections, you use your real name, especially since, as we grow, it makes it easier to discriminate amongst people with fairly common first names but we also understand that some people prefer to use a screen name.
We promise to take great care of your personal contact details but we know that some people are nervous about them falling into the wrong hands.
To avoid any possible malevolent or mischievous behaviour, we need to know who you are but, for your privacy and comfort, you may choose to be identified by just a first name, or "M.E. Sufferer", place name or geographical area, or "name and address supplied".
If you would like to be a member but have a particular fear that, if your contact details became known, you would be pestered or in danger, you may contact us at info@mefreeforall.org with "Membership" in the subject line and we can provide you with a safer alias.
The advantages of membership far outweigh any disadvantages and some of the problems listed here.
Applying for membership is free and easy. If it turns out to be not what you wanted, or expected, you may resign at any time or, if you would like to take a break, you can re-join later. It's always up to you.
Site contentSome websites make apologies for being "under construction". ME Free For All.org will be permanently under construction. It is an organic, dynamic, site that takes the shape its members give it. |
